SeaWorld Rescues Wayward Dolphin

A dolphin is back in open waters thanks to SeaWorld Orlando’s Animal Rescue Team. On March 31, the group carried out an eight-hour rescue and relocation operation for the male dolphin that managed to swim into the Tomoka River in Ormond Beach, FL.

After the rescue and a veterinary health assessment, the 12-person rescue team relocated the marine mammal along the Intracoastal Waterway in Ormond Beach.

As lesions started to form on in its skin due to exposure to freshwater, biologists determined a rescue operation was needed to assist the animal. Now that the dolphin is back in saltwater, the lesions should begin to dissipate.

The successful venture was made possible by a collaborative effort between SeaWorld, NOAA Fisheries Service, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, The University of Florida and Volusia County.
