They live in animal care, back by um.. You know where they had Cirque de la Mer? AC is back there.

I went of the bayside ride and could see AC from the ride, it was a little bit of a distance but was able to pick out all the old RPP dolphins, and I saw the little commerson dolphins too, they were being so hyper, it was so cute. I usually hate those kinds of rides, If it wasn't for the fact that I was trying to pick out the dolphins I would have been freaking out.

Well, you could if you took a behind the scenes tour.

They're trying to get approval to build a new exhibit in the parking lot, back where Wild Arctic is. I *really* hope they do, because then the dolphins will have a much nicer place to live with rocks and stuff.

Our tour guide told us to write SWC and tell them we wanted to see the Commerson's, so you should write in about it. =) Also... mmm.. I don't know if there's enough time to bug the Coastal Commission about it. I'm waiting to hear back on that. =\

also what is the common dolphins name...i thought commons were bigger and the yellowish part i thout it was brighter. the one at swc was real dull alomst i would call grey....

one question they say the dorsal is for balance in the water right? what about the whales and dolphins who don't have dorsals?

The common dolphins at SWC are Bella and Buster. There's also a hybrid named Bullet - she's more of a muted tone, more greyish with stripes like a common.

<br>And as for dorsals - I always thought they provided balance for animals that swam faster, like a bottlenose. But then northern right whale dolphins are pretty zippy too, and they don't have dorsals either, so I dunno.

I've only seen Cindy in the show, but I've heard Buster is in the show too sometimes.

I think Buster is primarly a DIP dolphin now. I think I've only seen Cindy perform once, but I don't make a habbit of touring by the shows unless I'm taking someone with me.

Last I rember, Bullet was a AC dolphin, it would be interesting if they were bringing her out a bit.

About the dorsal fin.. I think the current speculation is that its primary purpose is thermoregulation, rather than hydrodynamic stability. (more than enough stability is rendered from the flippers, flukes and dorsal ridge.)

Yeah, the only time I've seen Cindy out was in early January, but I rarely go to the shows either. =P Actually, that's the only time I've seen Cindy, period.

It is a hypothetical to say that the dorsal provides balance. Dolphins or other whales who do not have dorsal fins are adapted for that kind of life. But after looking at animals who have lost their fin, yet still swim fine, it is safe to say taht the entire fin is not neccessary.

Yep, dorsals provide stability. Although how exactly they determined that, I have no idea. :) Also, they can help cool the animal by providing a large surface to lose heat through.

here is what ask shamu said

Thank you for your email. The dorsal fin is used as a stabilizer and to help
thermo regulate. Whales without dorsal fins use their pectoral flippers to
stabilize. Larger whales also use their large body mass and volume of blubber
to balance themselves in the water.

So they're trying to build a Commerson's exhibit in the SWC parking lot? BTW, has anyone heard any updates on the building of the splash down ride or the Master Plan?

Buster is a DIP dolphin, but is used for shows on an occasional basis every once and a while. Cindy is used for shows, Bella for shows and is still in training, and Bullet is used for both DIP and shows.

The SD City Council and Coastal Commision are voting tomorrow. I sent an e-mail of support to all city council members. I wish I could attend the hearing and possibly speak, but it conflicts with my work schedule :(

Some of it may involve the parking lot. I've got a pic of the schematics if anyone would like me to scan it and post it.
