Anyone know what happened to this little guy? I haven't been able to find any more info, and this was posted August 3rd.

Isn't that a striped dolphin in the photo?

Holy crap, you're right, I don't know why I didn't catch that. The caption that went with the picture is as follows:

Quote:

Our animal care/rescue team is working to save the life of an ill juvenile common dolphin found stranded on a beach in Malibu on Friday. When he arrived, he weighted 48 pounds and was slightly dehydrated. He is receiving around-the-clock care from our animal care team and our veterinarians are conducting multiple medical test. We are currently tube feeding him and he has put on almost 1.5 pounds over the weekend.

That looks like a common dolphin to me. The stripe you're seeing is more obvious on this calf because he/she is very young and the color patterns so obvious on adults are still very muddled. If you look at a photo of either short- or long-beaked common dolphins you'll see the same stripe.

I agree, looks likes a Common Dolphin to me, I thought the Stripes were more pronounced on a Striped Dolphin and went down the side further.

It apparently passed away.

The facial markings are too simple and distinct to be a Delphinus, and in the second photo the spinal blaze in partially visible.

Oh, what a shame. I'd kind of expected as much, since there were no more Facebook updates about its progress. Thanks for the info!

much clearer shots of its marking, from those it doesn't look like a common, more striped. wonder why SW has called it a common?

In general, a very young calf's coloration is much different (either more pronounced OR duller) than an older juvenile or adult.

Delphinus have several color morphs; one of which has the stripes seen in the calf in question. SeaWorld likely determined the species not only by coloration, but by teeth count as well. Delphinus have many more teeth than S. coerualba.
