Albino whales and dolphin pics!
      #131902 - 01/09/06 09:56 PM

I was just cruising the web and I found some amazing picks of Migaloo, the albino humpback whale in the Pacific Ocean. I actually saw him when I was visiting in Maui, it was amazing! Of course I had just been SCUBA diving and didn't have any film left. Hope you enjoy the pics though!

Here is an albino white-sided dolphin. The naturalist I worked with at Cape Ann Whale Watch, Cynde, took the pictures.

Nice finds. The ray is just stunning.
There's a round goby at Shedd that I think may be albino (i've never gotten a good look at it's eyes). I keep meaning to take a pic of it, but I keep forgetting.

Just thought I'd mention that Migaloo is actually part of the East Coast Australian Humpback group, which travel up to the Great Barrier Reef Area of North Queensland during Southern Autumn/Winter (April-October - approx).

This is a completely different group from the group that travels to Hawaii. These whales spend the Northern Winter in Hawaii, and the summer in Alaska. Southern Humpacks spend their summers in Anarctica.

Even though one year a couple of humpbacks from West Australia travelled up the East Coast (Researchers could tell because the East song changed to the West song), and there is a possiblilty that some Australian humpbacks travel to Tonga, overlap between Northern and Southern groups is highly unlikely.

Southern Humpbaks even have a different colouration pattern from Northern ones, with having much more white on their bellies, where Northern humbacks are almost all black (except for pecs and the underside of flukes). This has lead some researchers to believe that Migaloo might actually be a 'freakishly' overwhite humpback, rather than an albino. However, most believe he is albino, and skin samples taken from last year should confirm this. He is also most definitly male, because he has been caught singing and courting females, and has not had a calf yet. I believe his also the only white/albino humpback on record.

Thought I's clear that up. Now, enough rambling from me.....

Oh, and the pics are pretty neat. Thanks for sharing
